The Valencia CF coach talks after the 2-2 result against Deportivo Alavés
Carlos Marchena arrived at Valencia CF in the 2000-01 summer transfer window from SD Benfica. He made his unofficial debut against FC Liverpool at the Amsterdam Arena where Valencia CF fell to a 0-1 defeat at the Amsterdam tournament summer trophy.
The Seville born player made his official VCF debut away at RCD Mallorca in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw. He had 16 appearances across a LaLiga winning season 31 years later in 1974.
The Andalusian became a key player in the double-winning season where he had 31 domestic appearances and eight European matches which him a place in the Spanish national side. He had 69 caps for Spain and was part of the European and World Cup-winning squad, one of the most decorated VCF players of all time.
Marchena returned to Mestalla to be paid homage at Mestalla to pose with his career honours on Matchday 32 against his boyhood Club Sevilla where he said that “Valencia CF will always be his home.”
